1. New Videos from the Last Concert

On February 2nd 2018, I had the pleasure of presenting a concert at the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, CA with my stellar collaborators, including Paul McCandless, Sheldon Brown and Dave Tidball on woodwinds, Frank Martin on piano and Fred Randolph on double bass. We played mostly original compositions from the band and a few fresh arrangements of pieces by Alice Coltrane, Dave Holland and Michael Brecker.

Special thanks to videographer Celso Alberti for shooting and editing these videos.

I hope you enjoy them and please feel free to share with your friends.

Nubian Hand Claps (arr. Ian Dogole) / Drum Solo

Ian was introduced to this traditional Nubian hand-clapping pattern by the gentle giant of the oud, Hamza el Din, with whom Ian collaborated often in the early 2000s. Sheldon Brown is featured on the flute. This was the introductory piece to the Ian Dogole & Music Beyond Borders concert at the 142 Throckmorton Theatre on February 2nd, 2018.

Methinks (for Frederick Sommer) (Ian Dogole)

Methinks is dedicated to the late master photographer, Frederick Sommer. This performance was recorded February 2nd at the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, CA. Special thanks to sound engineer Edwin DeShazo and videographer Celso Alberti.

Smiles for Billy (Ian Dogole) is a dedication to one of the great jazz drummers of all time, Mr. Billy Higgins. Ian plays the hang (pronounced hung), a singular melodic percussion instrument from PanART in Switzerland, inspired by the steel pan of Trinidad. This is the first time that Ian performed this entire piece as a solo.

Ian Dogole's Udu Solo was performed on February 2nd, 2018 at the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, CA.

Ian Dogole's Cajon Solo was performed at the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, CA on February 2nd, 2018.

4. Working with Developmentally Disabled Students

Redwood High School AUU Class.jpg

During this past winter, I had the pleasure and honor to work with a class of developmentally disabled students at Redwood High School (Larkspur, CA) through a program entitled Arts Unite Us, developed by Youth In Arts. My objective was to share the healing and transcendent power of music with these students and hope that I could have some positive impact.

In one class, the students were severely compromised, with very limited mobility, and I must admit I had some trepidation about the assignment prior to the first session. As the weeks elapsed, I felt increasingly connected to these students and my trepidation morphed into exhilaration!

Any time there was a perceptible breakthrough ... even at the most subtle level ... there was a celebratory feeling in the classroom, which was quite uplifting for all involved. The instructors, nurses and student assistants were so supportive and from my perspective, they're all heroes for their devotion and consistently positive attitude.

Many thanks to Youth In Arts for offering me this opportunity.
